Some of Ruff's dogs attended the Grand Reopening of Laura's Pet & Horse Supply.
The weather was less than perfect, but the dogs didn't mind. They love getting
out to meet new people! One of the radio stations was even on hand. We were
honored that we were invited as a valued customer and have built a trusting relationship
that keeps us going back to them again and again. Laura's has the look and feel of an old time feed store. You can bring your dogs along and let them pick out a favorite chew toy. They have everything you'll ever need and can even handle special orders. The staff is very very friendly and helpful and that's why we get most of our supplies from them. If you like a store with a personal touch and down home feel. Visit them the next time you shop. Laura's Pet & Horse Supply is located at 1051 John Sims Pkwy E, Niceville FL. 32578. (850) 678-2270. Rio is being held by the very sweet young lady who found him. Her heart is broken for him because she knows he is missing his family who apparently left him behind? She comes at least twice a week to visit with him and keep his "spirits" up. She's doing her part...won't you help too with some of your time and/or donations? We are a "no kill" shelter with many dogs that need medical attention. Lucky for Rio...he is healthy...But not all are so lucky...Others need surgery. | |

Update from proud owner of Riley: Just thought we'd send a picture of Riley, whom we adopted January 2005. He turned two in February. A few days ago he got a new squeaky dinosaur that he loves to play with. As you can see, it's so cute how he lays the toy on the foot rest, then rests his head until you pick it up to throw it for him!

HONEYSUCKLE'S STORY: Honeysuckle was hit by a car near a convenience store
in Walton County. Someone took her to the emergency vet Clinic in Niceville
& dropped her off, knowing she was injured but unable to pay for her care. The emergency clinic vet called RUFF & told the director the dog had a badly broken leg that required surgery. If RUFF could guarantee payment for the work they had already done.....their only other option would be to call the animal control who cannot guarantee payment on injured dogs. RUFF guaranteed payment and agreed to become responsible for her so we were allowed to bring her to RUFF. She was immediately named Honeysuckle. She went to two vet clinics. One for her immediate need of bleeding from her rectum. This was due to severe whip worms overtaking her little fragile body to the point of anemia and needed immediate attention. They took care of that issue for her and diagnosed her leg as severe to the point that extensive surgery was needed and they did not have the equipment to handle this type surgery... so they suggested Dr. Whiteside from Wynn Haven Clinic.
Dr. Whiteside did a wonderful job on her leg. She has 2 pins in her leg & has worn a cast for 2 weeks. During most of this time she was fostered by a wonderful RUFF volunteer & had a chance to learn what love is. She is eager to please & is picking up basics of being housebroken as hard as it was for her to have a cast on her leg at the same time. She has not been distructive or disruptive in her foster home, even though just a pup. The vet says she will need a lot of attention & informal "therapy" during her healing process. She is only 4 months old, her leg is still growing & needs to be exercised so it will grow properly. The vet will work with her foster or owner to teach them what they should or should not do to allow her to heal properly. Ideally, she would go to live with someone who has a pool......(the vet says) swimming is the perfect therapy for dogs with leg surgeries! She is a playful pup & would enjoy a playmate, but should not be in a home with large, rowdy dogs who could reinjure her leg before it is healed. She has done well with her foster mom's 14 yr. old dog who is too old to want to play. RUFF does a wonderful job rescuing dogs but unfortunately we do not have enough help to devote the one on one time to special needs dogs like Honeysuckle. We do not want her to have to be here long, confined to her pen, without the chance to heal her leg to it's maximum potential. She needs special love
and attention, she needs someone to take time to exercise her leg and
hopefully a swimming pool to help her use it more. Dr. Whiteside said
swimming is the best thing we can offer a hip or knee surgery patient. Anyone interested can see her at RUFF. Her foster mom was not able to continue to keep her after her cast came off Wed. Aug. 8th. Please help us tell her story to try to make her stay at RUFF as brief as possible. Thank you for caring!
